In this article, the author attempts to explain the leading factors behind growing Islamic infl uence in Azerbaijan. She describes social, political and economic problems as main triggers of Islam gaining stronghold across the country. The author argues that as a result of continued problems such as corruption, poverty, and semi-authoritarian government combined with disillusionment with the West and support of various religious sects from countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the rise of fundamental Islam has been inevitable.
